Announcement and Call for Participation in Future World Educating for the 21st Century Conference and Exhibition to run alongside IOI '97 9TH International Olympiad for Informatics Presented by: SBS CONFERENCES 2 - 4 DECEMBER 1997 University of Cape Town Middle Campus Education Building IOI '97 The International Olympiad in Informatics is an annual competition designed to foster problem solving and computer programming skills, as well as promoting international understanding and friendship between the competitors. It has been run annually since 1989 when the first IOI was held in Bulgaria. South Africa is the host nation for IOI '97 which will attract teams from approximately 60 countries. Together with their officials and supporters we anticipate over 500 international visitors. This year's Olympiad from 30th November to 7th December will be held at the University of Cape Town, giving us the opportunity to enhance South Africa's image abroad and to create interest in and awareness of our country's potential as a role player in future developments in the field of information technology. Future World will run over three days, concurrently with the 9th International Olympiad in Informatics. Most importantly, IOI '97 Future World will give you the opportunity to network and exchange knowledge and experience with top ranking IT education experts from over 60 countries. Future World - Educating for the 21st Century Conference and Exhibition The conference and exhibition is being organised by Strategic Business Services (Pty) Ltd. in conjunction with the Executive Committee of IOI '97, the University of Cape Town and the Computer Society of South Africa. The Executive Organising Committee will endeavour to ensure that participants enjoy a fulfilling and beneficial programme. Future World will be targeted at people involved in education and training, from governmental education departments; private & public schools; adult education centres; colleges; technikons; universities and corporate human resource departments. Conference Theme & Topics The following details provide some ideas on the topics that can be considered for inclusion in the conference programme. Papers may include these topics but are not limited to them. Day 1: Education Planning for the 21st Century * The Future Workplace * Future Funding - government vs private sector. How does South Africa compare? * Globalisation and its impact on education * Technology: What does it offer now and in the next few years? * Future Curriculum - What do we need to teach: The educationist's perspective/ The business perspective * The Internet - How can schools exploit it? * International vs National Perspective: How much emphasis must we place on international standards and curriculum requirements? * Panel debate: The way ahead for South Africa - panel of teachers, HR executives and governmental education departments Day 2: Specialist Half Day Workshops These workshops would be hands-on to help delegates better understand what can be done with the available technology and how to do it. These may include some case studies examining what has been achieved. * Computer-Assisted Education * Developing Video Training Programmes * DTP * Broadcast TV * Education via the Internet * Computer Graphics and Animation * Distance Learning and Technology Day 3: The Role of Technology in Future Education Overview of the current status in South Africa and overseas. Case Studies (3) on how schools are utilising technology to teach computer studies. Case Studies (3) on how schools are utilising technology to teach other subjects. Panel debate: Are we making use of the opportunities available? Call for Papers Papers should consist of a cover page and an abstract of the proposed paper. Presentation time will normally be 45 minutes of which 5 minutes should be allowed for questions. The cover page should contain: * The title of the paper * The proposed topic * Your full name & title (Mr., Dr., Prof.) * Name of your employer * Your job title * A brief CV of 50 to 100 words The abstract should contain brief details of the main areas of your presentation and should be between 200 and 500 words.
